Where Should My Palms Be Facing During My Golf Putting Grip? There are a number of ways to place your hands on the handle of your putter within the grip. One of the most common sees the left hand (for a right handed golfer) in what would be described as a weak position.

This position would see the left hand turned too much towards the target with the palm of the hand facing away from you. You would then see the palm of your right hand facing the hole or slightly left of it, creating a grip that would see your putter face remain slightly open throughout the putting stroke.

The way in which you place your hands on the handle to build your grip is very important no matter what style of grip you choose to adopt. Take your putter and practise placing your hands on the handle in the following way:

  • Take your putter and hold it with your right hand on the shaft just below the grip. Place your left hand on the handle making sure that the grip sits more into the palm of the hand around the lifeline area. Place the putter head on the ground so the sole sits flat on the ground. You should notice that the back of your left hand is pointing towards your target.
  • Place your right hand on the handle, fitting the grip into the palm of the hand, so not only does the palm of your right hand face the palm of your left hand but it also faces the target. Now you have your hands on the club in a neutral position, this will make it easier for you to keep the putter face square to your path, enabling you to hit your putts along your intended line more often.

If your hands were to be placed on the grip in this way youre putter face would be slightly open to the path throughout the stroke. This would see you miss the majority of your putts on the high side of the hole, with the exception of putts that had a right to left break for a right handed golfer or left to right break for a left handed golfer.

With your hands placed on the grip in this way your putter face would be slightly closed to the target during this through swing. This would see you miss the majority of your putts to the left of the hole. The exception to this would be if the putt was breaking from left to right for a right handed golfer or from right to left for a left handed golfer.

No matter what style of grip you use, your hands should be placed on the handle of your putter in a neutral position. This position sees the arms and the hands hanging just as they would do if they were down by your sides. The only exception to this rule would be if you were to adopt the claw grip or if you used a broom handle putter.
