You're Correct!

Should I Just Use My Pitching Wedge For All Golf Shots Around The GreenWhen you find yourself with a shot from around the green, the variation of shots you could be faced with is endless. You can have lots of green to work with, no green to work with, be on short grass, be in long grass...the list goes on.

This variation requires you to use all the clubs in your bag in order to give you the best chance to chip the ball close to the hole.

Here is a scenario, you have a shot from 20 yards to the flag, your ball is in medium rough and you have 15 yards of rough and 5 yards of green between you and the flag. Imagine trying to play this shot with a pitching wedge, you have not much chance of landing the ball on the putting surface and stopping the ball close to the hole. This is why you need to vary your club selection based on the shot you are faced with. For this scenario, you would be best taking your highest lofted wedge and popping the ball up high in order to land the ball soft on the green and hopefully result in getting the ball close to the hole.

Next time you are faced with a shot around the green, follow this procedure:

  • Observe your lie
  • Look at the hole and what obstacles are between you and the hole.
  • Pick a landing spot
  • Pick a club based on the landing spot and distance roll out

If you follow this guide line, you will be selecting the correct tool for the job more often when faced with shots around the green.

There will be times on the golf course where you need to alter the way you set up and the style you play a shot in order to hit the ball on the desired flight and hit the ball close to the hole. This doesnt mean to say you can just use a pitching wedge and alter how you set up to the ball. The variations in the clubs you carry are there to help you negotiate your way around the course, so use them wisely.
