How Can I Find The Best Putter For My GameThere are currently hundreds of different putters available on the market, and it can be a minefield for you to try and find the perfect putter.

The first thing you must do is to find out what type of putting stroke you have. If your putting stroke moves straight back and straight through, whether it has a slight arc from in to square to in, or even if you have a considerably large arc, this will influence the type of putter that would fit your putting stroke best.

There are three ways to distribute the weight around the head of a putter, each way will work best within a particular putting stroke. These are a face balanced putter, a slight toe weighted putter and a pure toe weighted putter.

The face balanced putter will see the face look up to the sky (horizontally) when you rest the shaft along the palm of your hand around six inches from the putter head. This type of putter works best with a stroke that moves straight back and straight through so the face stays looking towards the target all the time.
The heel and toe weighted putter will see the face hang at 45 degrees from the horizontal when the shaft is resting across your palm. This type of putter will work best with a stroke that moves ever so slightly back and through on an arc. As the stroke arcs, the putter face will stay at 90 degrees to the arc and will then impact the ball as it moves back to the square position on the proviso that you have the ball position correct in your set up.
The toe weighted putter or toe hang as it is sometimes known will see the face hang down almost vertically when the shaft is resting across your palm. This type of putter will be at its best with a stroke that moves back and through on a considerably bigger arc. The face will stay at 90 degrees to the arc due to the fact that most of the weight is in the toe end of the head.

To test your stroke, lay a stick or a long iron on the ground. Take your putter, set up with the centre of the face over the stick and make your usual stroke. You will see how your putter moves back and through, showing you if your stroke arcs or not.

The look of a putter is a very important aspect to consider when youre looking to buy, but it is not the be all and end all. The look of the head and the way it sits behind the ball will all help to inspire confidence but if it doesnt fit in with your stroke you might as well use your driver to putt with.

There are some fantastic and incredibly knowledgable sales people working throughout the golf industry and especially in the high street stores across the country. They will offer you some great assistance but more often than not they wont be qualified to tailor the club to you perfectly. When the time comes, you must make sure you get the club fitted perfectly to your individual needs by a PGA Professional.
