Merritt started college at Winona State University before transferring to Boise State University before his junior year. After a successful senior year where he won seven tournaments including winning five in a row, he turned pro in 2008. Merritt got his first and only pro win in 2009 when he captured the Nationwide Tour’s Mexico Open after sinking a 20 foot putt for birdie on the first play-off hole. That December he attended Q School where he gained his PGA Tour card for the 2010 season. In the process of getting his card he became only the third person to lead after every round at the PGA Tour Q School. The 2009 Q School class has gone on to achieve a lot of success, graduates include; Rickie Fowler, Billy Horschel and Graham DeLaet.

In his first season on the main tour, Merritt held onto his card by the skin of his teeth, finishing 125th on the money list, the final position to retain your card. He proceeded to lose his card in 2011 and had to toil on the Web.com Tour for a couple of years before regaining his PGA Tour in 2013 after finishing 30th at the Web.com Tour Finals. Despite having only one top 10 finish in 2014, Merritt managed to comfortably retain his card after finishing 101st in the money list. He actually missed the cut in his first six tournaments of the season. This was achieved in most part thanks to a runner-up finish in the FedEx St. Jude Classic, finishing one shot behind Ben Crane.  Merritt is on course to retain his card in 2015. He finished third at the RBC Heritage tournament after shooting a 61 on the Friday.
