Purtzer was born in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1951. His brother Paul was also a keen golfer who played on the PGA Tour in the 1970s and 1980s. After high school he studied at Arizona State University in Tempe, where he also played on the college golf team. After graduating from college in 1973, Purtzer immediately turned professional.

To many who know the game of golf Purtzer has one of the sweetest swings of any golfer. He put this majestic swing to good use winning on the PGA Tour across three separate decades before going on to achieve further wins on the Champions Tour.

Away from the course Purtzer has friends who are involved in other types of sport, including baseball professional Robin Yount. He is also a country music fan and is great friends with Vince Gill. Aside from enjoying all sports and music, Purtzer also loves auto racing. He is also putting something back into the world of golf, by running the Purtzer Performance Golf School and Academy along with his brother Paul.
