Pernice was born in Kansas City, Missouri in 1959. After high school he attended college at UCLA where he was amongst excellent company on the golf team, playing with fellow future professionals including Corey Pavin and Steve Pate. While at college, Pernice was two-time All-American before graduating in Economics in 1982.
After turning professional in 1983, Pernice spent some time playing on the PGA Tour where he won two events. After celebrating his 50th birthday in 2009, Pernice began playing on the Champions Tour, and triumphed at his debut event, the SAS Championship. At this time, Pernice also continued to play on the PGA Tour on occasion. During 2012 Pernice had full status on both the PGA Tour and the Champions Tour.
As of the end of 2014, Pernice had achieved two wins on the PGA Tour, amassing total prize money of $14,950,598.
