Born in Austin, Minnesota, in 1959, Lehman always credits Alexandria, Minnesota as being his official hometown. After high school, Lehman went on to study at the University of Minnesota, from where he graduated with a degree in business and accounting. After graduating from college, Lehman turned professional in 1982.
Initially Lehman achieved little success on the PGA Tour. After struggling to achieve any results on the Tour, for two seasons, he had to go and play elsewhere. This meant that he had to play on the Ben Hogan Tour in the US, as well as traveling abroad to play in both South Africa and Asia. In 1991 Lehman managed to finish at the top of the money list on the Ben Hogan Tour which meant he could return to play on the PGA Tour for the following season. Since then Lehman has continued to play on the PGA Tour with no breaks. He won the PGA Player of the Year title in 1996. This was the year when he won his only major title, at the Open Championship.
Over his entire career Lehman has won in excess of 19 tournaments. He also captained the US Ryder Cup team in 1996, although unfortunately for them the team was defeated.
Since 2009 Lehman has been playing on the Champions Tour, where he has achieved some success. He won his first tournament on the Tour, at the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf. Lehman went on to achieve a victory at Senior PGA Championship in 2010. That year he finished at the top of the money list and was named Champions Tour Player of the Year. This meant that he became the first player to be named Player of the Year on each of the tours run by the PGA.
Away from the course, Lehman is a family man. He is married to Melissa and the couple has four children.
As of the end of 2014, Lehman had achieved five wins on the PGA tour amassing total prize money of $21,495,877.
