Schulz was born in Louisville, Kentucky where he has continued to live ever since. After high school, he attended the University of Louisville where he played on the golf team. After graduation, Schulz turned professional in 1984 and joined the PGA Tour that same year. He has also played on the Nationwide Tour and Champions Tour since.
Since commencing his PGA Tour playing career, Schulz has achieved fifteen top 10 finishes. His best year on the Tour came in 1991, when he won the Nissan Los Angeles Open, finished in the top 10 on four other occasions and finished in 29th place on the money list. Just three years later, in 1994, Schulz’s fortunes changed when he lost his card to compete on the PGA Tour. After this time he began competing on the Nationwide Tour instead, where he achieved his best result at the NIKE Central Georgia Open in 1995, finishing in a tie for 13th place.
In 2010 Schulz began competing on the Champions Tour. He won his first event on the tour that same year, at the Home Care & Hospice First Tee Open at Pebble Beach.
Away from the course Schulz is a family man. He is married to Diane and the couple has three children. Even when not playing Schulz is very much involved in golf, as director of golf instruction at The Cardinal Club in Louisville and as a volunteer assistant golf coach at his alma mater.
As of the end of 2014, Schulz had achieved two wins on the PGA Tour, amassing total prize money of $1,645,216.
