Freeman was born in St. Charles, Missouri in 1959. He took up golf when he fractured his leg at the age of fourteen, preventing him from participating in other sports. Freeman is not the only member of his family to play the sport; his brother Jeff is also a golfer. After high school, Freeman attended college at the University of Central Oklahoma, before turning professional in 1983.
Freeman was a silver medalist at qualifying school in 1988, which earned him a place on the PGA Tour for the following year. After this Freeman moved between the PGA Tour, where he finished in a tie for second place at the 1995 GTE Byron Nelson Classic, and the Nationwide Tour, where he achieved two victories in 1998.
Since 2009, Freeman has been playing on the Champions Tour. In 2009 he tied for 8th place at the 2009 U.S. Senior Open. He achieved the same result at the 2010 Senior PGA Championship.
As of the end of 2014, Freeman was yet to achieve a win on the PGA Tour, but had amassed total prize money of $2,174,378.
