Thompson played college golf at Georgia Tech and was part of the team that captured the ACC Championship in 2002. He also was a member of the United States team that lost to Great Britain and Ireland at the Walker Cup in 2005. After graduating in 2005, Thompson decided to turn pro. Thompson captured his card the first time of asking at Q School at the end of 2005. He played 32 times in his rookie season, making the cut on 15 occasions. However, he only had one top 25 finish which came at the B.C. Open presented by Turning Stone Resort where he was a tie for 6th place. He would lose his card. He finished 6th on the Nationwide Tour rankings the following season to regain his card. He won an event (at the HSBC New Zealand PGA Championship) and had runner-up finish during this stellar season.
He had his best finish on the PGA Tour in 2008 when he was runner-up to Ryan Palmer at the season ending Ginn sur Mer Classic. This was one of six top 10s for Thompson in what was his best season to date. He would finish the year a career best 41st on the money list. Thompson would lose his card again after the 2010 season and wouldn’t regain it until 2013.
Thompson had a solid year in 2013. He had seven top 25s including a couple of top 10 finishes with his best result coming at the Sanderson Farms Championship where he finished in 4th place. He would end his season 87th on the money list. He played some solid golf in 2014 to once again retain his card.
