Lancaster taught himself how to play the game and decided to have a go at professional golf in 1985 when he turned pro. He plied his trade on the various mini Tours across the United States for a number of years before successfully coming through Q School in 1989 to earn a first ever PGA Tour card for the 1990 season. He played 26 times in his rookie season and made the cut on 11 occasions. He had a couple of top 10s, a tie for 10th at both the Deposit Guaranty Golf Classic and the Federal Express St. Jude Classic. He ended his rookie season 142nd on the money list and would have to return to Q School to regain his card.
It was in 1994 that Lancaster captured his first and only Tour title at the GTE Byron Nelson Golf Classic. The event was reduced to 36 holes due to inclement weather and Lancaster won the event after a play-off with five other players. It was his only top 10 finish of the year. He had his best ever finish at a Major Championship the following season at the US Open where he ended the week in a tie for 4th. Lancaster would keep his full card until 2005 and then had conditional status for a number of years due to a medical exemption he received after undergoing multiple shoulder surgeries. He became eligible for the Champions Tour in 2012 and has played 14 times to date.
