Madsen moved from his native Denmark to play college golf at Oregon State University. He graduated in 2011 and turned pro shortly after. In 2012 he played on the Challenge Tour (second tier Tour in Europe) and won his full European Tour card after finishing 19th in the rankings. He played 23 times in his rookie season, making the cut in 15 of them. He had a total of three top 10s with a best result coming at the Madeira Islands Open where he finished in a tie for 2nd behind Peter Uihlein. He would end his rookie season 81st on the money list.
Madsen would capture his first (and only to date) European Tour win in 2014. He won the South African Open Championship by two shots from Jbe Kruger and Hennie Otto after a closing round of 67. This was one of only two top 10s for Madsen and he ended the year 67th in the European Tour rankings. He has two top 10s thus far in 2015 with a best result coming at the Africa Open where he was a tie for 3rd place. He has played in two Major Championships to date, the 2012 British Open where he missed the cut and the US Open in 2013 where he finished in a tie for 28th position.
