    McCullough graduated from Bowling Green State University in 1968 and turned pro two years later in 1970. He started playing on the PGA Tour in 1973 and would keep his card until 1988. After playing in 451 PGA Tour events, McCullough failed to win a title on tour. He made 270 cuts, had 26 top 10s including four 3rd place finishes and a runner-up result to Mark Hayes at the Players Championship in 1977. His best season on Tour came in 1978 when he had five top 10s and finished the year 42nd on the money list. His best result at a Major Championship was a tie for 10that the 1977 US Open.

    He played on the Nationwide Tour for a number of years, playing in 35 events and having a total of two top 10 finishes. He became eligible for the Champions Tour in 1995 where he has won twice. Both wins came in 2001, the first at the Mexico Senior Classic by a single stroke in February and then just a few weeks later he would capture the Emerald Coast Classic after a play-off with Andy North. He would finish the seasons a career best 12th on the money list. He has played 440 times on the Tour and has registered 58 top 10s including being runner-up on five occasions.
