After playing golf at Modesto Junior College, Bettencourt graduated in 2002 and turned pro shortly after. He toiled on the various mini Tours in the United States for a number of years. Playing on the Nationwide Tour in 2008, Bettencourt won twice and also had a second place finish to end the season 1st in the standings. These wins came at the Oregon Classic and the Nationwide Tour Championship at TPC Craig Ranch. As a result, he earned his first ever PGA Tour card.
In his rookie year, Bettencourt played 31 times, making the cut on 17 occassions. He had two top 10s with his best result coming at the Memorial Tournament where he was a tie for 5th place. He would end his rookie season 111th on the money list. He captured his first and only Tour title to date the following year. He won the Reno-Tahoe Open after Bob Heinz missed a three foot putt on the last hole which would have forced a play-off. This was his only top 10 finish of the year and gave him a two year exemption.
After the 2012 season, his exemption had run out and he lost his card after finishing 171st on the money list. He returned to the Nationwide Tour the following year. He had two runner-up finishes in 16 events and managed to regain his main Tour card after finishing 16th in the Tour rankings. He would lose his main Tour card again and now plies his trade on the Web.com Tour.
