Guthrie had a successful college career while at the University of Illinois where he won seven times. Two of his wins in college came at the Big Ten Championships. While still taking college classes in 2012, he turned pro. Guthrie played ten events on the Web.com Tour in 2012 and won twice, was runner-up once and 3rd once. His first pro win came at the Albertsons Boise Open where he won emphatically by four strokes. His second win came a week later at the WNB Golf Classic where he closed with a round of 66 to defeat Danny Lee and Cameron Percy by one shot. He finished the ten events with a total of seven top 10s and was 2nd in the rankings. As a result, Guthrie won his first PGA Tour card.
Guthrie played 27 times in his rookie season, making the cut on 14 occassions. He had two top 10s with his best result being a 3rd place finish at the Honda Classic. He also played in three of the Major Championships (all except for the Masters) with his best result being a tie for 47th at the PGA Championship. He finished his rookie year 83rd on the money list.
Guthrie managed another two top 10s the following season with a best result being a tie for 5th place at his second event of the season, the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. He would go on to end the season 111th in the standings. He has played 22 events so far in 2015 and has had a single top 10 which came at the Valspar Championship where he was tied 7th. He still has some work to do before securing his card for the 2016 season.
