Kim had a good amateur career having won several tournaments. He turned pro in 2006 and managed to win in his second ever start on the Asian Tour, at the Maekyung Open where he won by an emphatic four shots. He has won six times on the Japan Golf Tour including winning three times in 2010. He became the first Korean golfer to lead the Japan Golf Tour money list. Kim has also won twice on the OneAsia Golf Tour.
He has played in eleven Major Championships, with his best finish coming at the 2011 US Open where he finished in a tie for 30th. Kim has played in a number of events on the PGA Tour. In 2011, he played in 9 events, making the cut on 7 occasions. He had two top 10 finishes. He came in a tie for 6th at the illustrious World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational and followed that result up with a tied 4th finish at the Wyndham Championship.
