Peterson was a three time All American while at the University of Louisiana. He also captured the 2011 NCAA Individual Championship. After a successful college career, Peterson turned pro in 2011. In his second Nationwide Tour event, he finished as runner-up. Peterson managed to qualify for the 2012 US Open which was played at the Olympic Club. In the third round he was paired with his mentor from LSU, David Toms. He managed to score a hole in one on the 13th hole. He played well and managed to finish in a tie for 4th place. In 2013 he played pre dominantly on the Web.com Tour. He finished runner up at the Web.com Tour Championship and was third on three occasions on his way to finishing 30th in the standings. He won the Web.com Tour Finals event and thereby captured his first ever PGA Tour card.
Peterson played 27 events in his rookie season but only managed to make the cut seven times. He had three top 25 finishes with his best result being a tie for 19th at the FedEx St. Jude Classic. He finished his rookie year 179th on the money list and hence lost his card. He returned to the web.com Tour Finals and finished 6th to regain his main Tour card. So far in 2015, Peterson has made the cut 17 times in 20 events and has registered six top 25 finishes. His best result to date was a tie for 11th at the Valero Texas Open.
