He was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia when he was 17. For nine months he underwent chemotherapy treatment in hospital. It then took a further year of recovery before Lyle was able to get foot on a golf course again.  Lyle went on to turn professional in 2004.

For the first couple of years of his professional career Lyle played on the Nationwide Tour, until he finished in 18th place on the money list in 2006, earning a PGA Tour card for the 2007 season. Lyle did not have a very successful first season on the PGA Tour, finishing in the Top 25 at only three tournaments. As a result, he returned to the Nationwide Tour for 2008. Having achieved wins at the Mexican Open and the Knoxville Open, Lyle finished in 4th place on the money list, and regained his PGA Tour card.

In 2012 Lyle was diagnosed with a recurrence of the leukemia he suffered from as a teenager. After going into a remission for a second time, Lyle made a comeback on the course, at the Talisker Masters in 2013. He played in a PGA sanctioned tournament for the first time in over two years, at the Web.com Tour's Midwest Classic, in 2014. He made his first PGA Tour start since 2012, at the Frys.com Open in October 2014.

In addition to playing on the Nationwide Tour and the PGA Tour, Lyle has also played on the PGA Tour of Australasia, where he finished in ninth place on the money list in 2006.
As of the end of 2014, Lyle was yet to achieve a win on the PGA Tour, but had amassed total prize money of $1,793,387.
