Hayes was born in Appleton, Wisconsin in 1965. He played golf while attending college at the University of Texas at El Paso.  While at college Hayes majored in marketing, and he graduated in 1988. The following year Hayes turned professional.

In 1992 Hayes played on the PGA Tour for the first time, following his success at qualifying school. Hayes did not finish high enough on the money list to retain his place on the tour, so he played on the Nike Tour, which is now the Nationwide Tour, in 1993 and 1994. After this Hayes regained his PGA Tour card. Again, Hayes only remained on the PGA Tour for one year, returning to the Nike Tour for the 1996 season. Since regaining his PGA Tour card for 1997, at qualifying school, Hayes has continued to play on the PGA Tour.
In 2012 Hayes’ career was interrupted by a knee injury.

As of the end of 2014, Hayes had achieved two wins on the PGA Tour, amassing total prize money of $8,391,406.
