Isao Aoki was born in 1942, in Abiko, Chiba, Japan. While he was still at school, Aoki caddied at the Abiko Golf Club, where he was first introduced to the joys of golf. Aoki turned professional in 1964, and went on to gain overall second place in the list of golfers with wins on the Japan Golf Tour. Between 1976 and 1981, Aoki topped the Japan Tour money list, on five separate occasions.
He also accomplished wins elsewhere. In 1983, he triumphed at the Hawaiian Open on the PGA Tour. The same year, he also won the Panasonic European Open on the European Tour. Between 1974 and 1999, Aoki played on the PGA Tour 164 times. At the 1980 US Open he achieved his best result at a major championship, finishing the event in second place. This success, combined with Aoki’s success on the Japan Golf Tour, meant that he finished third in the unofficial World Rankings in 1980. In 1987, Aoki finished in what had become the official World Rankings Top 10, for several weeks.
After he began his senior career Aoki spent most of his time playing in the United States on the Champions Tour. He won nine times on the Champions Tour, between 1992 and 2003. He also achieved a level of success outside of the US. He won five times in the Japan Senior Open.
As of the end of 2014, Aoki had achieved one win on the PGA Tour, amassing total prize money of $960,573.
