Leggatt was born in Cambridge, Ontario, Canada in September 1965. He was introduced to golf by his father when he was a child. Leggatt played golf at Texas Wesleyan University. Leggatt turned professional in 1990 and played on the Nationwide Tour, where he won one event and the PGA Tour where he also won one event.
Leggatt retired from professional golf in May 2009, as a result of injuries. He has since begun working for Wasserman Media Group, as a consultant and agent. Leggatt also works in the media. He is a golf analyst on Sportsnet. Since 2013, he has been the Director of Golf at The Summit G&CC.
Away from golf, Leggatt is heavily involved with charitable causes. At one time he was the Athletic Director of Cerebral Palsy Foundation of Tarrant County in Fort Worth. Leggatt is also sponsored by Ronald McDonald Children's Charities to raise money for children in need.
As of the end of 2014, Leggatt had achieved one win on the PGA Tour, amassing total prize money of $2,410,796.
