Tanihara has ten wins on his native Japanese Tour. In each 2006, 2007 and 2008 seasons, Tanihara won twice. He has played in a Major Championship event eight times. He has never played in the US Open. His best finish was a tie for 5th at the British Open Championship in 2006 at Royal Liverpool Golf Club where Tiger Woods won. He has represented his country at the World Cup on three occasions. His sole appearance in the Royal Trophy came in 2009 when the Asian team won it for the first time. He also played in the 2014 Eurasia Cup where the result was a draw.
Tanihara attended PGA Tour Q School in 2003 and managed to obtain a PGA Tour card for the 2004 season after finishing in a tie for 21st. He played 20 times in his rookie season and only made the cut six times and had no top 25 finishes. His lost his card after finishing the season 224th no the money list. He played in three events on the PGA Tour season in 2014 and managed a top 10 finish at the Sony Open where he finished in a tie for 8th. This finish qualified him for the next event on Tour which was the Farmers Insurance Open.
