Willis was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 1973. He did not start to play golf until he was thirteen years old. After high school, Willis studied at East Tennessee State University where he played on the golf team, and was All-American in his senior year. As an amateur Willis was successful in winning the Canadian Amateur Championship in 1995. The following year he turned professional, after graduating from college.

Willis started his professional career on the Hooters Tour, before moving to what was then the Buy.Com Tour, and is now the Nationwide Tour. In 2001, Willis played on the PGA Tour for the first time, at the Touchstone Energy Tucson Open. He went on to win the event.  Since then he has split his playing career between the PGA Tour and the Nationwide Tour.

Away from the course, Willis is married to Jennifer, and lives in Tennessee.

As of the end of 2014, Willis had achieved one win on the PGA Tour, amassing total prize money of $3,942,192.
