Jacobson was born in 1974, in Kungsbacka, Sweden. As a child Jacobson played many sports, until he became focused on golf. He and his friends created a small golf course on farmland near to their homes. Jacobson even took up a paper round, so that he had some money to spend on golf clubs. He turned professional in 1994, and spent the first years of his career playing on the European Tour. In 2003, Jacobson won his first event on the European Tour. This was followed by two more wins in the same season. He was the first Swedish player to achieve this. That year, Jacobson finished in fourth place on the European Tour Order of Merit. The following season Jacobson joined the PGA Tour, and he just missed out on a place in the European Ryder Cup team.

It was some years later, in 2011, that Jacobson won his first event on the PGA Tour, at the Travelers Championship. Later that same season, Jacobson finished in second place at the WGC-HSBC Champions in Shanghai, China. At one point Jacobson was in the lead but he lost out to a good final round from Martin Kaymer, the eventual winner.

In 2013, Jacobson lost out on the chance of a PGA Tour Title, when he missed out on a play-off at the Northern Trust Open, by one shot.

During his career, Jacobson has been placed in the Top 20 of the world rankings.

As of the end of 2014, Jacobson had achieved one win on the PGA Tour, amassing total prize money of $16,215,614.
