Mast was born in Bluffton Ohio, in 1951. After school, he attended St. Petersburg Junior College, from where he graduated with a business degree, 1971. The following year he turned professional.
Throughout the 1970s, and the early 1980s Mast played only occasionally on the PGA Tour, before finishing in fourth place at the qualifying school in 1985, thereby securing his card for the 1986 PGA Tour. Mast retained his card until the 1989 season when he lost his card after finishing in 173rd place on the money list. As a result, Mast spent the next season playing on the Ben Hogan tour, which is now known as the Web.com Tour. After finishing in third place on the money list for the season, Mast regained his card for the PGA Tour. He played on the Tour until he again lost his card in 1994, after finishing in 131st place on the money list. After this point, Mast played on both the PGA Tour and what had become the Nike Tour (now the Web.com Tour). Mast’s best performance on the PGA Tour came at the Greater Milwaukee Open in 1992, when he finished second.
In 2001, Mast turned 50, and qualified to play on what was then the Senior PGA Tour (now the Champions Tour). He continued to play on the tour until 2007, achieving his best results at the Senior British Open in 2006 and 2012 and the Turtle Bay Championship in 2002. At all of these events Mast finished in third place, twice as part of a tie.
As of the end of 2014, Mast had not achieved any wins on the PGA Tour, but had amassed total prize money of $1,123,039.
