Born in 1955, in what was then Salisbury, Rhodesia and what is now Harare, Zimbabwe, Watson went to school at Oriel Boys High School, Chisipite. In 1975 Watson became Rhodesian Sportsman of but he actually represented South Africa at the World Series of Golf, in both 1980 and 1982.
After turning professional in 1976, Watson began playing on the European Tour in 1978. He played on the tour until 1980, after which time he relocated to the US and began playing on the PGA Tour. In 1984 he finished in a tie for the most wins on the Tour that season. The following season Watson finished in second place at the US Open. The same year a freak accident ruined Watson’s golfing career. He hit a hidden tree stump while playing at the Goodyear Classic in South Africa. As a result he needed surgery on his neck and wrist. Although he returned to the game, Watson continued to suffer as result of the injuries, and he retired at the end of the 1990s.
Despite his earlier injury problems, Watson rediscovered his form on the Champions Tour where he achieved his first win, at the Senior PGA Championship at Kiawah Island, in 2007.
As of the end of 2014, Watson had achieved three wins on the PGA Tour, amassing total prize money of $1,288,621.
