Both Edwards and his older brother Danny became professional golfers. Edwards played golf throughout his college career, at Oklahoma State University. In both his junior and senior years, he was first team All-American. After graduating from college, Edwards turned professional in 1978 and joined the PGA Tour in 1979.
During his PGA Tour career, Edwards finished in the top 10 of tournaments on 65 occasions. In 1984, he finished in a tie for third place at the Masters. As the years passed, and he became older, Edwards began to split his time between the PGA Tour and the Nationwide Tour. This change was in preparation for joining the Champions Tour, which he did in 2006. He won his first event on the tour, the 3M Championship, later that year.
Away from the course, Edwards is a keen pilot, and often flies himself to tournaments.
As of the end of 2014, Edwards had achieved four wins on the PGA Tour, amassing total prize money of $4,773,199.
