Born in Onida, South Dakota in 1958, Byrum is the younger brother of fellow professional golfer Tom Byrum. The brothers learned their golf skills by playing on a course they were tasked to mow. Byrum was just skilled at golf at high school, he was also highly skilled at football and basketball. After school Byrum attended the University of New Mexico, where he continued to play golf. After graduation he turned professional in 1982, and started to play on the PGA Tour in 1983.

Since turning professional Byrum has played on both the Nationwide and PGA Tours. He has achieved top 10 finishes in nineteen PGA Tour events, one of which was a win. Byrum has also won twice on the Nationwide Tour.  In 1987 Byrum achieved his best result in a major, finishing in joint 14th position at the PGA Championship in 1987. Orthopedic ailments curtailed Byrum’s playing career, and although he commenced playing on the Champions Tour in 2009, he only took part in three events.

Byrum has continued his interest in golf away from playing, as a Nationwide Tour analyst for The Golf Channel.

As of the end of 2014, Byrum had achieved one win on the PGA, amassing total prize money $1,576,537.
