Ohio born Knost was a golfer from a young age. While he was studying at Southern Methodist University he earned both all-conference and all-region honors. Knost won several events as an amateur, including three United States Golf Association events in 2007. That year he was also part of the successful US Walker Cup team. Prior to turning professional Knost was ranked at number 1 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, for five weeks in 2007. After turning professional in 2007 Knost played three events on the PGA Tour and made the cut in two of them. He attempted to gain his tour card for the following season, at qualifying school, but was unsuccessful.

As a result, Knost played the 2008 season on the Nationwide Tour, where he won both the Fort Smith Classic and the Price Cutter Charity Championship. After a relatively successful season, Knost finished in 6th place on the money list and earned his card for the PGA Tour for the following season. Knost’s first full season on the PGA Tour was not especially successful. His best finish was a tie for 22nd place at the Bob Hope Classic. At the end of the season Knost didn’t finish high enough on the money list to retain his card. He played one season back on the Nationwide Tour before regaining his card for the PGA Tour by finishing in 15th place on the money list.

Knost remained on the PGA Tour until 2013 when he finished in 184th place and spent the next season playing on the Web.com Tour as a result. His finishing place at the end of the season meant that he qualified to return to the PGA Tour for the 2015 season.
As of the end of 2014, Knost had yet to achieve a win on the PGA Tour, but had amassed total prize money of $1,546,090.
