Born in San Diego, California in 1973, Riley went on to attend the University of Nevada, Las Vegas where he was four year All American. Riley was the first person in any sport to achieve this. During his time as an amateur Riley played for the 1995 US Walker Cup team.

After turning professional in 1996, Riley began playing on the Nationwide Tour, before commencing his PGA Tour career in 1999. During his time on the PGA Tour, Riley finished in the Top 30 on the money list in 2002 and 2003. He achieved his only PGA Tour win at the Reno-Tahoe Open in 2002. He also participated in the 2004 Ryder Cup, where he was part of the losing US team.
Since then Riley hasn’t seen great success in his career. He won the Rochester Area Charities Showdown at Somerby in 2007, on the Nationwide Tour, but he didn’t do as well on the PGA Tour, finishing outside of the Top 125 on the money list in both 2005 and 2006. The last time Riley played a full PGA Tour season was in 2010; he has played only occasionally after that time.

Away from the course Riley married fellow professional golfer Michelle Louviere.
As of the end of 2014, Riley had achieved one PGA Tour win, amassing total prize money of $11,510,984.
