Born in Sweden in 1977, Pettersson spent his childhood and teenage years living first in England, then in the USA, due to his father’s job, working for Volvo; he eventually became a US citizen in 2012. After finishing high school, Pettersson attended North Carolina State University, and in 2000 he won the European Amateur, after which he turned professional.

Pettersson began his professional career playing on the European Tour, and won at the Algarve Open de Portugal, in 2002. That same year Pettersson won a place on the PGA Tour at qualifying school, since then he has played mostly in the US. It took a few years for Pettersson to achieve his first win on the PGA Tour, which came at the 2005 Chrysler Championship. This win was followed by a second, in 2006 at the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village.

In 2009 Pettersson adopted a new lifestyle regime, whereby he worked out and cut down on the amount he ate. It seemed that the changes didn’t agree with his golf, and he missed the cut in 10 out of 15 tournaments. Pettersson returned to his previous lifestyle, and in 2010 he won on the PGA Tour for the fourth time, at the RBC Canadian Open. His fifth PGA Tour win came in April 2012, when he triumphed at the RBC Heritage at Harbour Town Golf Links. The same year Pettersson achieved his best finish in a major, when he ended the PGA Championship in a tie for third place.

As of the end of 2014, Pettersson had achieved five wins on the PGA Tour, amassing prize money of $21,227,060.
