Born in Sacramento, California, in 1962, Henninger was both a keen golfer and tennis player at high school, before going on to play golf at the University of Southern California. After leaving College, Henninger turned professional in 1992, and joined the PGA Tour the following year. In 1994, Henninger won on the PGA Tour for the first time, at the Deposit Guaranty Golf Classic in Madison, Mississippi. This was also the venue for his second Tour win, in 1999, although by then the event had been re-named the Southern Farm Bureau Classic.

In the early 2000s Henninger’s career took a disappointing turn, as he failed to secure any decent results and lost his PGA Tour card at the end of the 2002 season. Although he never paid regularly on the PGA Tour again, spending the majority of his time playing on the Nationwide Tour, Henninger did play some further PGA Tournaments as a past champion, an alternate or through exemptions. On turning 50, Henninger commenced playing on the Champions Tour.

Away from the course, Henninger is a family man who lives in Wilsonville, Oregon with his wife, and their three children. He set up the Brian Henninger Foundation which has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to various worthwhile causes.

As of the end of 2014 Henninger had achieved two wins on the PGA Tour, amassing total prize money of $3,316,461.
