    Mitchell was born in Chatham, Virginia and grew up in the nearby town of Danville, Virginia. Golf was an important part of Mitchell’s life from a very early age, as he dropped out of school to turn professional at the age of fifteen.

    Before joining the PGA Tour Mitchell tasted success with victories at the Virginia State Golf Association Open, the Virginia State PGA Open and the Carolinas PGA Championship. Once he had joined the PGA Tour, Mitchell achieved some success with two wins, at the 1971 Cleveland Open and the 1972 Tournament of Champions, and in excess of two dozen top ten finishes. In 1972 he achieved his best finish in a major, in a tie for second place at the Masters. Mitchell has been playing on the Champions Tour since 1995, where his best finish has been a tie for twelfth place at the 1995 Transamerica.

    Giving something back to the golfing world, Mitchell travels with Averett University each summer to coach young people in the sport.

    As of the end of 2014, Mitchell had achieved two wins on the PGA Tour amassing prize money of $410,975.
