McCallister was born in Ford Stockton, Texas and attended the University of Houston where he roomed with fellow golf professional Fred Couples. After leaving College, McCallister turned professional in 1981, joining the PGA Tour the following year. During his career, McCallister won five times on the PGA Tour, with all of these wins being achieved in the time around the late 1980s and early 1990s. Once he turned 40, McCallister began to split his time between playing in the PGA Tour and playing on the Nationwide Tour, before joining the Champions tour in 2008, after he turned 50.
Unusually McCallister plays the game with a mixture of right-handed and left-handed strokes. He is naturally left handed, but he strikes the ball right-handed, although he putts southpaw.
Outside of the world of golf McCallister is dedicated to working with eyesight organizations, as his wife Claudia suffers from a rare eye disease called pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE).
As of the end of 2014 McCallister had achieved five wins on the PGA Tour, amassing prize money of $5,227,278.
