The Titleist 716 AP1 irons are basically the next evolutionary step from the AP1, which were released 2 years ago, back in 2013, but the changes are relatively significant.
The most important upgrade is in terms of distance, as the Titleist 716 AP1 will definitely boost your yardage, but without sacrificing forgiveness in the process.
After playing a few rounds with these irons I can vouch that they can compete easily with almost any other iron in their class, with flying colors. Even the design has an almost obsessive attention for details, and that makes them hugely desirable for discerning golf players.
What makes these irons different from the previous generation is the weighting and the new design of the cavity back and the sole. This new approach created a brand-new species of iron, being the most forgiving and the longest in Titleist portfolio.
Examining these babies carefully will reveal the long and deep undercut cavity in the back of the iron's head, which helps with moving the centre of gravity as low/back as possible, thus increasing the iron's forgiveness and launch. The low CG also works miracles when it comes to accuracy and ball speed.
The head of the Titleist 716 AP1 is cast using 17-4 stainless steel, which gives it tremendous strength , yet it's also specially treated in order to be malleable, so it will bend when necessary, for helping you adjusting the lie. Also, there's more tungsten incorporated into their sole, 50 percent more than in the previous generation.
What I love the most about the 716 AP1 is that all these technical improvements were implemented without compromising the superb feel and the awesome looks that Titleist is well known for.
In conclusion, the Titleist 716 AP1 irons are an excellent choice if you're looking for additional distance and extra-forgiveness, but don't worry, these babies are very playable for any type of golfer.
