Kelly was born in Tacoma, Washington in 1978. He played golf from a very young age and was in fact the youngest player to compete at the Washington State Junior Golf Association (WJGA) tournaments which he did when he was just six years old. It wasn’t long until he was WJGA state champion; a feat which he accomplished at the ages of 11 and 13. Altogether Kelly won more than 40 tournaments during his amateur career. After graduating from the University of Washington, he turned professional in 2003.

At the start of his professional career, Kelly played on a succession of mini tours for the first five years. These tours included the Gateway Tour, the Golden State Tour and the AG Spanos Tour. Aside from these mini tours, Kelly also played on the Canadian Tour in 2008.

After gaining his card at qualifying school, Kelly began playing on the PGA Tour in 2009. It wasn’t a successful start to his PGA Tour career as he made the cut in only three of the 17 events he started. Kelly also played on the Nationwide Tour in 2009, and he played only on that tour the following season. He finished in the top 10 on four occasions and ended the season in 11thplace on the money list. This was a good enough result to secure him a card to play on the PGA Tour the following season.

It wasn’t until the Greenbrier Classic came along that Kelly began to achieve any level of success on the PGA Tour in 2012. After almost achieving a win at this event, he eventually finished in second place after a play-off. Despite not winning, Kelly’s place in golf’s World Rankings was greatly improved by this result; he rose from 464th place to 167th place. The result also earned him a place to play at the 2012 Open Championship, although he failed to make the cut when he competed at the event.

As of the end of 2014, Kelly had yet to achieve a win on the PGA Tour, but had amassed total prize money of $858,552.
