Finau was born in 1989, in Salt Lake City, Utah. After attending high school he had to make the decision about whether to attend college. Finau did have several offers of basketball scholarships at college, but he made the decision to turn professional as a golfer instead. This was a brave decision to make at the age of just seventeen. Finau started out as a professional playing on many of the small tours in the US. The tours he played on included the Gateway Tour, the NGA Hooters Tour and the National Pro Tour. In addition, Finau began playing on the PGA Tour Canada in 2013. He made a fairly successful start to his career on this tour, making the cut in seven of the eight events he started. Finau achieved more success that year, finishing in a tie for third place at the Web.com qualifying school which earned him a place to play on the Web.com Tour the following season. During his first season on the Web.com Tour, in 2014, Finau achieved a win, at the Stonebrae Classic. This victory helped him to finish in 8th place on the Web.com Tour at the end of the season, which in turn earned him his card to play on the PGA Tour the following year.
Aside from appearing on the golf course, Finau has also appeared on the small screen, with his brother Gipper, when he took part in the Golf Channel's The Big Break in 2009. Finau’s ancestry is of both Tongan and American Samoan descent. He is the only professional golfer of that ancestral heritage to have participated on the PGA Tour.
As of the end of September 2015, Finau had yet to achieve a win on the PGA Tour, but had amassed total prize money of $2,071,921.
