Pate was born in Ventura, California in 1961. After finishing high school he went on to study at UCLA where he played on the golf team and became a team mate of future fellow professional golfer Cory Pavin. In 1983 Pate was All-American. After graduating from college, Pate turned professional in 1983 and went on to join the PGA Tour the same year.

Pate’s first victory on the Tour came at the Southwest Golf Classic in 1987 and the following year he achieved one of his best seasons in golf when he finished in 12th place on the money list. That year also saw one of his best performances in a major when he finished in a tie for third place at the US Open. Pate’s performance in 1991 was even better, and led to him finishing in 6th place on the money list. This position came at the end of a season during which he made an impressive appearance at the Masters where he finished in a tie for third place.

Pate has suffered several injuries over the course of his career, which have caused him to take a break from the course. One such injury was a broken wrist sustained in a car accident in 1996. On his return to the course Pate was named PGA Tour's Comeback Player of the Year in 1999.

Aside from his accomplishments playing as a an individual, Pate also achieved success as a member of the US Ryder Cup team in 19914 and 1999 when the team secured victory over Europe.

Since his comeback from injury, Pate has also played on both the Nationwide Tour, where he secured victory at the Pacific Rubiales Bogotá Open in 2010, and the Champions Tour, where he made his first appearance in 2011.

Away from playing, Pate has also been involved in the design of several courses, partnered with Damian Pascuzzo.
As of the end of 2014, Pate had achieved six wins on the PGA Tour, amassing total prize money of $8,039,987.
