After a successful amateur career including a Walker Cup appearance in 1967, Oosterhuis turned pro. He was named the Henry Cotton Rookie Player of the Year in 1969. For the first half of his career, Oosterhuis plied his trade on the European Tour. He won four successive Order of Merits between 1971 and 1974. He moved over to the PGA Tour in 1975 and played there for over ten years. He won a total of seven times on the European Tour, registering three wins in both 1973 and 1974. His sole win on the PGA Tour came in 1981 at the Canadian Open where he finished a single stroke ahead of Jack Nicklaus, Bruce Lietzke and Andy North. He finished runner-up in the British Open on two occasions, in 1974 and 1982.

Oosterhuis made six successive appearances in the Ryder Cup between 1971 and 1981, being on the losing side on each occasion. He retired from tournament golf in 1987 and became a director of golf in the United States for a number of years. In the early 1990s, Oosterhuis began working as a golf commentator and he has continued this role to the present day.
