    Azinger played most of his college golf at Florida State University and he turned pro after graduating in 1981. He successfully came through Q School on his first attempt to earn a card for the 1982 PGA Tour season however he only managed to register a single top 10 finish and duly lost his card. His breakout season came in 1986 when he finished runner-up on two occasions and in third place on two occasions. Azinger would end the year 29th on the money list.

    He would capture his first career PGA Tour title the following season as well as his second and third. His first win came at the Phoenix Open in January, a two shot victory over Hal Sutton. In May, Azinger closed with a round of 64 to finish one stroke ahead of Hal Sutton at the Panasonic Las Vegas Invitational. At the end of June he would capture the Canon Sammy Davis Jr.-Greater Hartford Open by six shots. He would end the year 2nd on the money list and the PGA Tour Player of the Year.

    Azinger would win at least one tournament a year for the next six seasons. In 1992 he won the Tour Championship by three shots. The best year of his career came in 1993 where Azinger won three times including his first and only Major Championship win. He won the PGA Championship at Inverness after a sudden death play-off against Greg Norman. His twelfth and final PGA Tour victory came seven years later in 2000 at the Sony Open. He won twice on the European Tour, the 1990 and 1992 BMW International Open, both after play-offs. He played in the Ryder Cup on four occasions, winning twice, tying once and losing once. He successfully captained the United States side to victory in the 2008 renewal.
