Born in San Gabriel, California in 1948, McCord attended Ramona High School in Riverside. After high school, McCord attended the University of California, Riverside, where he was twice Division II All-American. After winning the NCAA Division II individual championship in 1970, McCord turned professional in 1971.

Although he played in a total of 400 PGA Tour events during his career, McCord never achieved a win. He did however finish in the top 10 of events on more than twenty occasions, with his best results both being second place finishes at the Greater Milwaukee Open, in both 1975 and 1977.

Away from the course, McCord has been heavily involved with sports casting over the years. He first worked for CBS Sports as an analyst in 1986. Since then he has become known for being especially outspoken with his comments. After comments he made about the 17th green at the 1984 Masters McCord was removed from the Masters commentary team, at the request of Augusta National Golf Club. McCord has not returned to commentate at the event since, although he continues to commentate on other events.

At the same time as working in commentating, McCord has played intermittently on the Champions Tour. He has achieved wins at both the Toshiba Senior Classic in 1999, and the Ingersoll-Rand Senior Tour Championship in the same year.
Using his golf expertise in other areas, McCord has written two golf books, appeared as himself in the golf themed movie Tin Cup and was co-announcer on Tiger Woods PGA Tour series, produced by EA Sports.

Away from golf, McCord is married to Diane, and has homes in both Arizona and Colorado.

As of the end of 2014, McCord had not achieved any wins on the PGA Tour, but he had amassed total prize money of $662,361.
