He started his college career at Arizona State University where he was team mates with future Tour players Tom Purtzer, Bob Gilder and Howard Twitty. He transferred to the US International University where he would be an All American selection in 1972 and also served as the team captain. After graduating in 1973, Hatalsky turned pro. He first won his PGA Tour card at Q School for the 1977 season.
He had a solid rookie year. He made the cut in 21 out of 27 events and had ten top 25 finishes. He finished runner-up on one occasion. His first PGA Tour win came in 1981 at the Hall of Fame tournament where he won by two strokes over Jerry Pate and D.A. Weibring. This unique event was played ten times between 1973 and 1982. It was played over two weeks and 144 holes at Pinehurst and had the largest purse in PGA Tour history at the time.
Hatalsky would win again in 1983, this time at the Greater Milwaukee Open where he shot a final round of 66 to force a play-off with George Cadle. He promptly won on the second play-off hole. Hatalsky would lose the Miller High Life QCO the same year in a play-off to Danny Edwards. He would end the season 56th on the money list. His next win would come five years later in 1988 at the Kemper Open after beating Tom Kite in a play-off. Hatalsky’s fourth and final PGA Tour victory came in 1990 at the Bank of Boston Classic after finishing a single shot ahead of Scott Verplank.
He became eligible for the Champions Tour in 2002 and duly won the Rookie of the Year award after winning once and finishing runner-up three times. He has three Champions Tour wins to his name.
