After graduating from Georgia Southern University in 1978, Donald turned pro. His first season on the PGA Tour came in 1980. He would keep his card until 1996. He started gaining some traction on Tour in 1984 when he finished 3rd at both the Georgia-Pacific Atlanta Golf Classic and the Kemper Open. He would finish the season 46th on the money list.
His first and only PGA Tour win came in 1989 at the Anheuser-Busch Golf Classic. Donald shot a final round of 65 to force a play-off with Tim Simpson and Hal Sutton. Donald would lose a play-off at the Deposit Guaranty Golf Classic to Jim Booros that season as well as finishing in a tie for 3rdplace at the Independent Insurance Agent Open.
He ended the year a career best 22nd on the money list. He very nearly won the US Open the following year. After 72 holes he was in a tie for the lead with Hale Irwin. They both shot a 74 in the 18 hole play-off so it went to sudden death where Irwin won on the first hole. Also in 1990, in his first ever Masters, Donald would tie the record for the lowest opening round at the tournament with a 64. Unfortunately he followed up that stellar round with an 82.
Donald became eligible for the Champions Tour in 2005 and has played 25 times to date with a single top 25 finish.
