Reid was a four time All American while attending Brigham Young University. After graduating in 1976, Reid turned pro. He joined the PGA Tour in 1977 and would keep his card until 2001. In his second season on Tour, Reid lost to Mac McLendon after a play-off at the Pensacola Open. In 1980, Reid made the cut in 27 tournaments and had an amazing total of thirteen top 10 finishes. He had a total of four 3rd place finishes on his way to ending the year 9th in the money list.

Reid had two runner-up finishes in 1985 including a play-off loss to Hal Sutton at the Southwest Golf Classic. Reid’s first ever Tour win came in 1987 when he captured the Seiko Tucson Open by four strokes over Chip Beck, Hal Sutton, Mark Calcavecchia and Fuzzy Zoeller. This was one of six top 10s for Reid on his way to finishing the season 24th in the standings. He would win his second and last Tour title the following season at the NEC World Series of Golf where Reid defeated Tom Watson in a play-off. He also had a runner-up and 3rd place finish on his way to placing 15th in the rankings.

After his second win, Reid had numerous close calls but never managed to reach the winners podium again. In 1997 he lost out in a play-off to Paul Stankowski at the United Airlines Hawaiian Open. His best finish in a Major Championship was a runner-up result at the 1989 PGA Championship. He became eligible for the Champions Tour in 2004 and has two wins on the Tour in 217 events. Both of those wins were Senior Major Championships, the Senior PGA Championship in 2005 and the JELD-WEN Tradition in 2009. Both victories came after play-offs.
