Putnam played college golf at Pepperdine University where he was an All American. He was runner up in the Individual NCAA Men’s Championship in 2005 after losing a play-off. He represented the United States in the Walker Cup and Palmer Cup sides in 2005 that were victorious. Playing on the Nationwide Tour 2006, Putnam had two 3rd places and two runner-ups finish (including a play-off loss at the Rheem Classic Pres'd) on his way to ending the year 17th in the rankings. As a result, he won his first PGA Tour card for the following season.
Putnam played 29 events in his rookie year, making the cut in 19 of them. He only managed two top 25 finishes with his best result coming at the Buick Invitational when he was a tie for 16th place. He would end the year 158th in the standings and therefore lost his card. He won back his main Tour card after finishing 24th in the Nationwide Tour standings in 2010. He was largely helped by a tournament victory at the Utah Championship which he won by three shots.
Putnam would lose his main Tour card again. In 2013, he won twice on the Web.com Tour to once more regain a PGA Tour card. He had nine top 10s as well as winning the Mexico Championship and the Mid-Atlantic Championship on his way to finishing 1st in the rankings. Putnam registered his first ever PGA Tour top 10 finish the following season at the RBC Canadian Open where he tied for 4th place. He ended the year 116th on the money list and therefore retained his card for the first time in his career.
