Dufner was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1977. When he was eleven his family moved to Washington DC. They then moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida three years later. This was when Dufner started playing golf, for St. Thomas Aquinas High School. Dufner attended Auburn University, from where he graduated in 2000, with a degree in economics.

After turning professional the same year, Dufner struggled to retain a place on the PGA Tour. He spent most of his time playing on the Nationwide Tour. Dufner now plays on the PGA Tour and he has achieved three wins on the tour. Dufner has also won one major championship, the 2013 PGA Championship. This victory came two years after Dufner finished runner-up at the 2011 PGA Championship, where he lost in a play-off to Keegan Bradley

As of the end of 2014, Dufner had achieved three wins on the PGA Tour, amassing total prize money of $17,229,769.
