Carnevale had a decent college career at the James Madison University before turning pro in 1983. It took nearly ten years for him to reach the PGA Tour. He gained his first Tour card for the 1992 season at Q School. He played in 28 events in his rookie year and managed to capture his first and only PGA Tour title. It came at the Chattanooga Classic where he shot a final round of 64 to beat Ed Dougherty and Dan Forsman by two shots. This was his only top 10 of the season and he ended his rookie year 70th on the money list.

Carnevale played some solid golf over the next couple of seasons. He was runner-up to Neal Lancaster in 1994 at the GTE Byron Nelson Golf Classic after he lost a play-off. Carnevale lost his card after the 1996 season and would only regain it twice more in his career. In 1997, he won an event on the Nike Tour, at the Inland Empire Open. He also had three runner-up finishes and three 3rd places on his way to ending the season in 2nd place on the Nike Tour and as a result regaining his PGA Tour card. Carnevale became eligible for the Champions Tour in 2010 but has only played in four events to date. He now does a lot of commentary work. His best Major Championship result was a tie for 25th place at the 1998 US Open.
