Durant was a three time All American when he attended Huntingdon College in Alabama. He also won the 1987 NAIA Championship. After graduating in 1987, he turned pro. He played on the various mini Tour for a number of years. He first won his card for the Nationwide Tour in 1991. He qualified for the PGA Tour for the 1993 season after successfully coming through Q School. In 18 events he only made the cut twice. Durant came 3rd in the Nike Tour standings in 1996. He won once (at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Classic), runner up once and two 3rd place finishes.

Durant would keep his PGA Tour card until 2012. He captured his first PGA Tour title in 1998 at the Motorola Western Open where he shot a final round 66 to beat Vijay Singh by two shots. He won twice in the 2001 season and also had a runner up finish. The first came at the five round Bob Hope Chrysler Classic where he won by four shots. Only a few weeks later at his next event, Durant won again, this time at the Genuity Championship where he finished with a 65 to beat Mike Weir by twos hots. He would finish the season 14th on the money list.

Durant would win his fourth and final PGA Tour title in 2006 at the FUNAI Classic at the Walt Disney World Resort where he won by four shots. He also lost a play-off that season at the Southern Farm Bureau Classic to DJ Trahan on the third extra hole. He would end the year a career high 13th on the money list. He lost his card a number of times in the intervening years, bouncing between the two Tours.  Durant became eligible for the Champions Tour in 2014. He captured his first win in 2015 at the Big Cedar Lodge Legends of Golf by three shots over Ian Woosnam and Sandy Lyle.
