Mudd had a successful amateur career and turned pro after graduating from Georgia Southern University in 1982. He started playing on the PGA Tour after he turned pro. In his rookie season, Mudd played 21 times, making the cut eleven times. His best result came at the USF&G Classic where he finished in a tie for 5th. He finished the season 116th on the money list and retained his card.

He had a breakout season in 1985 when he finished runner-up on three occasions. Two of these finishes came after a play-off. He lost to Phil Blackmar on the first extra hole at the Canon Sammy Davis Jr.-Greater Hartford Open and he lost the Texas Open to John Mahaffey at the second extra hole. Mudd had a total of six top 10s on his way to finishing the season 34th in the standings.

It was in 1988 that Mudd captured his first PGA Tour title. It came at the Federal Express St. Jude Classic where he finished a single stroke ahead of Nick Price and Peter Jacobsen. He finished the season 23rd on the money list as a result. He won again the following season, this time beating Larry Nelson in a play-off at the GTE Byron Nelson Golf Classic.

The 1990 season was the best of Mudd’s career. He won twice. The first win came at the prestigious Players Championship where he won by a stroke from Mark Calcavecchia. Mudd’s second win of the season and what would be his fourth and last PGA Tour win came after a play-off with Billy Mayfair at the Nabisco Championship. Mudd would finish the year a career high 5th on the money list.
Mudd lost his card after the 1994 season and never regained it.
