After finishing in 4th place at the 1998 British Open Championship, Rose turned pro at the age of 18 years old. Rose struggled badly after turning pro. He missed the cut in 21 consecutive events in his rookie season after gaining his card through Q School. He started to see some success on the European Tour in 2001 when he finished runner-up on two occasions. He won twice the following season, at the Dunhill Championship and the Victor Chandler British Masters. He finished the year 9th on the money list. He struggled with form for a number of years. His next win came in 2007 at the Mastercard Masters. He won again that season after a play-off with Simon Dyson and Soren Kjeldsen at the Volvo Masters. He ended the year as the leading money winner.

He had been playing on both the PGA Tour and European Tours for a number of years. He captured his first PGA Tour title in 2010 at the Memorial Tournament; he won only a few weeks later at the AT&T National. Rose finished 15th in the FedEx Cup standings. The following year Rose captured a FedEx Cup event, the BMW Championship by two strokes. He came 5th in the FedEx Cup. In 2012, Rose captured another big victory, this time at the WGC-Cadillac Championship where he beat Bubba Watson by a single stroke. His first Major Championship win came in 2013 at the US Open. He won at Merion Golf club by two shots from Phil Mickelson and Jason Day. Roses’ seventh and most recent win came at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans in April 2015.

He has made three appearances in the Ryder Cup, 2008, 2012 and 2014 and has been on the winning side on two occasions.
